Description
Description | Opportunity McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH) is a pediatric academic health science centre that serves the unique needs of children and youth by using a family-centred model of care. Founded in 1988, MCH has become a leader in pediatric evidence-based care, collaborative research and leading-edge education. In order to consolidate a number of children and youth health care services operating from Hamilton Health Sciences’ Chedoke campus, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services funded the design and construction of a new children’s treatment centre across from the Regional Rehabilitation Centre. Innovations PCL financed construction of the new facilities until substantial completion, shifting significant financial risk for late delivery onto the builder. Results The new four-storey, 165,000 square-foot treatment centre was completed on-time and on-budget. Services provided at the new facilities include: Autism Spectrum Disorders Services; The Child and Youth Mental Health Program; Developmental Pediatric and Rehabilitative services including Audiology Services; and Prosthetic and Orthotic services. All together these programs accommodates approximately 70,000 visits annually. The facility is fully accessible and includes an outdoor wheeling track, therapeutic playground and physiotherapy space. The facility is designed to suit the needs of its patients and families including a spacious atrium with full height windows and outdoor terraces to maximize natural light; colourful furniture, accent walls and textural materials to create an inviting environment; and rooms designed for the comfort of patients and visitors. The treatment centre is publicly controlled, publicly owned and publicly accountable. Health services continue to be funded and provided by the public sector. “This is an important project for Hamilton and the entire region. It further enhances the health care services in our community and the construction of this facility will create jobs and spur economic activity.” - Ted McMeekin, MPP, Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale |
