Description | The Roosevelt Freeway was a proposed limited-access freeway planned in the 1950s to address growing traffic issues in Eugene and Springfield, Oregon. The freeway would have cut across the valley and bypassed both downtowns, connecting with Interstate 5 and linking east Springfield with west Eugene. Construction began on portions of the roadway, including a bridge over the Willamette River, but the project faced significant opposition due to demolition of neighborhoods and displacement concerns. The full freeway plan was officially scrapped in 1978 after years of debate and protests, with a scaled-back connector concept also eventually cancelled. |
