Description | The demolition of the 87-year-old, city-owned Roosevelt Island steam plant in Manhattan has been halted due to violations of asbestos abatement rules by the city. The project is managed by the city Housing and Preservation Department and involves asbestos abatement work that was found to pose a threat to human safety. Work cannot resume until a plan addressing all disturbed asbestos-containing materials is approved by the Department of Environmental Protection. The demolition start date is still months away, and asbestos abatement is expected to continue until the fall. The site has been featured in several Marvel streaming series and other TV shows. The building was decommissioned in 2014 and slated for emergency demolition in 2024 due to deteriorated masonry along its smokestacks. The site is on land leased to New York state, which is considering possible redevelopment. |
