The proposed word builds on co-operation from an earlier Interreg II-A project, but now targets near-term research and development for inexpensive, indoor microcellular wireless networks. The technology to be developped has clear exploitation routes, with a spin-out company already set-up on the UK side and provision for IEMN fabrication activities (or even a spin-off company) on the French side, and has very strong ties to important developements elsewhere, such as a potential BT start-up company. The project can put the region at the forefront of some of the latest developments in communications technology, and should attract direct inward investment beyond the lifetime of the project.
