Route 363 and 434, Binghamton Gateway Project

The City of Binghamton Arterial Route, NYS Route 363, was constructed in the early 1960s as part of the infrastructure boom from 1955 to 1965. During this timeframe, the City of Binghamton was near its peak population of 80,000. The construction of the Route 363 corridor reduced traffic congestion on the City’s local streets. However, it primarily accommodated vehicular traffic and created disconnected access between the City and Susquehanna River. The plan to transform Route 363 is highlighted in various local planning documents including: City of Binghamton 2005 Local Waterfront Revitalization Program Two Rivers, One Future; City of Binghamton 2014 Comprehensive Plan Blueprint Binghamton: Forward Together; and the 2014 Broome New York Rising Community Reconstruction Plan. In 2016, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced an investment of $59M to redevelop the Route 363 and 434 corridors, enabling NYSDOT to initiate the Route 363 Gateway and Route 434 Greenway Projects.
