Description

Description

Route 40, also known as the National Road, was built between 1811 and 1834 as the first highway built entirely with federal funds in U.S. history. Authorized by Congress in 1806 during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, construction began in Cumberland, Maryland, in 1811. The road paralleled the military road opened by George Washington and Gen. Edward Braddock in 1754-55 through Grantsville, Maryland, and Addison in southern Somerset County. It served as a major east-west artery, opening travel to the western settlements and facilitating commerce and settlement in the Ohio River Valley and the Midwest. The road saw various phases of use and revival, including the rise of automobile travel and the establishment of U.S. Route 40 in the mid-1920s. The National Road Heritage Corridor has been designated as a state heritage park to enhance the economy through tourism.
