Description
Description | New York State Department of Transportation is preparing a Route 9 Complete Street Preliminary Engineering project. This project will progress through Scoping and Preliminary Engineering Phases I-IV and propose a series of recommendations including a preferred alternative capable of enhancing safety, and pedestrian and bike facilities along Route 9. Recommendations from the Route 9 Corridor Study (2018) will be reviewed including the recommendation for a road-diet. A road diet is a transportation planning technique used to achieve systemic improvements to safety or provide space for alternate modes of travel. For example, a two-way, four-lane road might be reduced to one travel lane in each direction, with more space allocated to pedestrian and cyclist facilities. Also known as a lane reduction or road re-channelization. A Complete Street is a roadway planned and designed to consider the safe, convenient access and mobility of all roadway users of all ages and abilities. This includes pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation riders, and motorists; it includes children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Complete Street roadway design features include sidewalks, lane striping, bicycle lanes, paved shoulders suitable for use by bicyclists, signage, crosswalks, pedestrian control signals, bus pull-outs, curb cuts, raised crosswalks, ramps, and traffic calming measures. |
