The Rubis-class submarines are the smallest mass-produced nuclear-powered submarines in the world, designed to be compact, low noise, and cost-effective multi-purpose nuclear attack submarines. The project involved designing a compact submarine with a reliable nuclear power plant, based on the diesel-electric Agosta prototype, with a turboelectric power system and advanced electronic systems. Originally, eight submarines were planned, but six were built and are currently in service with the French Navy, scheduled to be replaced by the Suffren-class submarines.
