Description | The project involves constructing the 10MW run-of-river Rukarara VI hydropower plant located in the Nyamagabe District of Rwanda. The goal is to increase hydropower capacity, reduce dependency on diesel generators, and contribute to Rwanda's renewable energy objectives by providing clean, sustainable energy. Prime Energy, the sponsor of the project, has a 25-year agreement with the Government of Rwanda to build and operate the Rukarara VI hydropower plant. Additionally, it has power purchase agreements with the Energy Utility Corporation Limited (EUCL), which is a government-owned company under the Rwanda Energy Group (REG)?. The total financing for the project is $7.3 million (Rwf 9.5 billion), raised through green bond issued by Prime Energy. This green bond is supported by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). Financial closure was achieved on April 5th, 2024. |
