Description | San Francisco International Airport (SFO) had a dual runway closure to perform federally mandated Runway Safety Area improvements. The closure lasted from May 2014 through August 10, 2014. SFO constructed special zones at the end of the runway to safely capture an aircraft’s landing gear should it overshoot the airstrip. More than 40 airports across the country are implementing these enhancements. A dual runway closure during the summer months was the fastest and safest option for completing this project. It took advantage of good weather conditions. SFO planned for this final phase of construction since 2008. Prior to the dual closure, Runway Safety Area improvements were already been made to two other runways. |
