Description

Description

Design and Construction: The City of Ottawa covers 2,770 sq km- much of which is rural in nature, with rural cross-section of roadways. Many villages in the rural areas lack safe cycling facilities. This program is intended to add paved shoulders along rural roads, to improve cycling connectivity as guided by the Ottawa Cycling Plan’s Spine Route network. Paved shoulders will be prioritized where they connect with LRT or BRT stations (esp. with Park and Rides) in the periphery of the network - allowing rural residents to take advantage of transit. Examples could include Old Montreal Road, which could (on addition of paved shoulders) provide cycling access to the Trim Rd. station for residents of Cumberland Village. The project will also support the acquisition of at least one 40-foot diesel new bus (more if possible) to operate on routes to and within the rural area (esp. in connection with the BRT via Park and Rides) to aid pedestrian and cycling traffic connectivity to the bus network. The expanded project activities are intended to further the City’s ability to advance community transit priorities by leveraging the remaining program funding allocation as much as possible, and is consistent with Council strategic direction.
