The core problem that the project addresses is the increase in social inequalities and worsening food insecurity in northern Togo, due, among other things, to inadequate water management in times of climate change. The aim of the project, which is being implemented by the Togolese Ministry of Water, is to contribute to the resilience of the vulnerable population and to stabilization in northern Togo by increasing and diversifying agricultural added value through increased use of irrigation potential. The project consists of four components: Component 1 Sustainable, participatory and inclusive rehabilitation of water retention basins and the associated infrastructure Component 2 Sustainable increase in the productivity of agricultural, pastoral, forestry and fish farming operations with a focus on women and young people Component 3 Increasing and diversifying the income of the rural population, especially women and young people Component 4 Strengthening the self-determination of women The target group of the project is the rural population in northern Togo, particularly in the Savanes and Kara regions. These are the regions of Togo with the largest proportion of poor people. The target group is expressly not limited to farmers, but also includes agro-pastoralists, sedentary and transhumant livestock farmers and, if applicable, other users of the water retention basins. A special focus in all components of the project is on supporting women and young people, who are considered particularly vulnerable and have the poorest access to resources, including land. The project thus contributes to the national implementation of SDGs 1, 2, 5, 12 and 13.
