Description

Description

The project is part of the Kenyan national “Last Mile Connectivity Program”. This program aims at greatly enhancing the number of households connected to the grid by increasing the number of distribution transformers and by connecting every household within 600 m of the distribution transformers. Together with other off-grid solutions, the objective is to reach universal access to energy for the Kenyan population by 2022. The AFD/EIB/EU funded project will connect about 300 000 households to the grid and is complementary with similar projects financed by other institutions (World Bank, African Development Bank), and the Government of Kenya. Access to electricity in Kenya was notably low in comparison with similar African countries. In 2015, the Government of Kenya (GoK) announced the « Last Mile Connectivity Program » aiming at universal access to electricity by 2022. This ambitious strategy based on international good practices and experience allows large economies of scale.
