The main objective of the project is to decommission and provide final cover to the current 2,250 m2 active cell. A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment and Annual groundwater monitoring have been completed. There are minor exceedances of chromium and nickel and manganese. Air emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide as well as small amounts of volatile organic compounds from the bacterial decomposition of organic materials will be reduced by close to 100% with an effective and properly designed clay cap. Upon completion of this project, a landfill expansion cell that is properly engineered with engineered liners and leachate ponds, as well as associated infrastructure such as leachate piping and drainage, will be constructed.
