Rural Roads Project

The development objective of the Rural Roads Project is to achieve broader, and more sustainable access to markets, and social services by the rural population in participating districts. To this end, the project components will: 1) provide access to eligible habitations in participating districts, through the construction, and upgrade of rural roads that form part of the core rural road network in participating districts, and in addition, the necessary environmental and social management measures, resettlement of project affected persons, and technical review of the rural road agency designs and supervision will be implemented; 2) implement annual periodic, and routine maintenance programs of the remaining core rural network in participating districts; and, 3) support the institutional development, providing technical assistance (TA) and goods for the program implementation, including assistance in planning, procurement, and supervision. Local contractors will be provided with training in planning, technical and environmental areas, while capacity building in program management will be provided to the Ministry of Rural Development (MORD), particularly in the areas of environmental, social, financial and procurement management, as well as in poverty impact assessment.
