Description

A project calling for the installation of a 750-MW/1,600-MWh battery in Queensland, Australia, has exited the EPBC approval queue and cleared to proceed. The project is a joint development of Gryphon Energy, Red Hill Renewable Energy and Ampyr Energy Australia, designed to support the retirement of the Gladstone coal-fired power station. The battery will be built within a 1,277-hectare cattle grazing site east of Bororen in the Gladstone Regional Council area, equipped with Lithium ferrous phosphate (LFP) technology, and connected to Powerlink’s existing 275kV transmission line. It will provide grid firming capacity and enhance the reliability and security of the Queensland network. Network upgrades and construction works are scheduled to begin in 2027, with energisation expected by 2029 to coincide with the retirement of the Gladstone power station.
