Rwanda - Institutional support project for environmental management (PAIGER)

The design of the Environmental Management Institutional Support Project in Rwanda results from ana analysis of environmental problems following the major population movements and their settlement in the forest ares and the drought that affected some parts of the country. It draws from the objectives set out in the programme to reduce poverty in Rwanda. More specifically, the project aims to build Rwanda’s institutional capacity to manage the environment. Accordingly, the project will diagnose the environmental situation, put in place an environmental information system and train staff of the structures responsible for the environment, the Directorate of Environmental Protection, in particular. In its approach, the project gives priority to local-level participation spotlighting the motivation and commitment of the authorities though an involvement in project implementation. To carry out its activities, the project comprises the following components: (i) capacity building, (ii) creation of database and (iii) project management.
