Rwanda - Kigali III water supply study

The proposed study includes the preparation of construction plans, technical specifications and tender documents for the following works and structures: construction of a water intake structure on the Nysbarongo River, sludge traps, raw water pumping station. The studies and plans will focus on meeting Kigali's estimated water demand until 2010 and will need to define appropriate implementation steps based on actual population growth. The purpose is to take into account new elements that have emerged in previous years, in particular: (i) the need to rehabilitate part of the capital's water supply infrastructure; (ii) the emergence of another route to fill the water supply gap in Kigali following the recent exploration of the Nyabarongo alluvial groundwater table. Thus, the study currently includes the following three phases: Phase 1: Assessment of current infrastructure and assessment of rehabilitation needs. Phase 2: Preparation of detailed design proposals (DPA) and tender documents (DAO). Phase 3: update of population studies and water demand by 2015, further study of the Nyabarongo alluvial groundwater table and Lake Muhazi and comparative studies of options for water resource mobilization as well as planning for the strengthening and extension of the distribution system by 2015.
