Description

Rwanda Mountain Tea, a Rwandese tea processing company, was planning the construction of a 4.5MW Giciye Mini Hydropower Plant, part of the output was to be fed into the national grid. The plant was to be located on the Giciye River, Nyabihu region. The project was to consist of 2 Pelton turbines, 2.0MW each. The developer was to sell the surplus output to the national energy and water utility EWSA. The percentage surplus was unknown. The company signed an EPC contract with Horizon Group. Horizon Group was expecting to partner with the Tanzanian electricity production firm Aquifer. Construction was expected to last 18 months, and start in February 2012, implying a commissioning date not before late-2013. The project was partly captured, feeding electricity to nearby factories of tea producers. Total cost was estimated at $12 million.
