Description

Description

India is considering modifying the existing S4-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) platform to develop nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines (SSGNs). This adaptation aims to provide a powerful, long-range strike capability using conventional submarine-launched cruise missiles, addressing a shortfall in underwater offensive capabilities while awaiting the Project-77 attack submarines. The modification involves converting missile silos to carry multiple smaller cruise missiles, enabling a single submarine to carry 24 to 32 precision-guided weapons.
