Description

Description

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT), Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), and GiddyUp EV are working together in a large-scale public-private partnership to build a new high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charging hub at the Power Inn light rail station in Sacramento, California. The Power Inn light rail station was considered due to its proximity to mixed-use retail and housing, US-50 freeway, and both industrial and commercial complexes. The development of the Mobility Hub at light rail station is expected to add amenities and mobility options for transit users and transit-oriented development. The charging hub will be open to the public in October 2021. When completed, it is expected to be one of the largest charging hubs in the state. The new EV charging hubs are part of a SacRT effort to provide road users more amenities like Mobility Hubs at light rail stations. The EV charging hub will be fully networked and integrated with SMUD's electrical grid. It will only impact 55 underutilized parking spots of 299 total spaces located in the light rail station park-and-ride lot. The project will be built in phases, and the first phase will include 10 high-speed charging stations that can accommodate up to 20 vehicles (including light- and heavy-duty vehicles such as buses and trucks). It will also include the installation of solar canopies, Wi-Fi, and future battery storage for public/private use. With battery storage and solar canopy, public fleets can charge during a power outage and excess generation of electricity can be sold back to the grid, therefore creating a sustainable loop. The project is making California a leader in implementing EV charging stations and helping meet the State's goal of five million zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the roads by 2030 and 250,000 charging stations by 2025. In addition, the governor's ZEV Acceleration Proposal in the California Comeback Plan is investing $3.2 billion over three years on clean transportation technologies across the State. The project will also help advance clean vehicle adoption, assist in SacRT’s future electrification requirements, encourage productive use of underused light rail parking, and help incentivize transit ridership. GiddyUp EV, a subsidiary of American Growth and Infrastructure (AGI), is funding the purchase and installation of the direct-current fast chargers (DCFC)/Level-3 chargers, which can recharge light and medium vehicles simultaneously in minutes compared to hours with a normal plug-in charger. The chargers can be used by both public, private, and fleet vehicles at a competitive cost for consumption. GiddyUp EV will pay for the market cost of the parking lot spaces and buy, install, own, and maintain the charging equipment. SMUD will supply power for the high-speed and integrated charging network. The project will provide a revenue-sharing model with SacRT and GiddyUp from the electric charging usage and other revenue generated from the charging stations. The project has a proposed five-year license agreement with GiddyUp EV and will require concurrence from the Federal Transit Administration.
