Belgian cellular telephone firm SAIT Telecom launched a telecommunications network on the GSM 1800 network in Kinshasa, the DR Congo capital, in December 2000. The Belgian operator had planned to provide 40,000 lines under the first phase of the scheme, with an investment of some 35 million Belgian Francs ($US40 million). The total project, a joint partnership involving investors from Belgium and Luxembourg, was expected to yield about 280,000 lines. Sait, operating under the brand name Oasis, had 48,000 customers by mid 2004. On September 2005, the Millicom International Group acquired 100% of the voting shares of Sait Telecom SPRL (Oasis Telecom SPRL), a mobile operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo . Millicom was expected to complete the allocation of the purchase price to the assets acquired, liabilities assumed and contingent liabilities in the second quarter of 2006.
