Description

Sakhalin Telecom provides a digital overlay communications network for Sakhalin and a full range of telecommunications services. The company also provides International Private Leased Circuits worldwide via the Cable and Wireless Global Digital Network. Sakhalin Telecom provides local, long distance, and international telephone services. Sakhalin Telekom provides direct communications with 100 international carriers, having access to 221 countries. Sakhalin Telecom was formed in December 1991, and was the first private Telephone Company in Sakhalin. Main Shareholders of the company were Cable and Wireless Plc. (60%), Comnicom (23%-Moscow), Sakhalin Regional Radio TV Transmitting center (state owned company-13%), and small inevstors (4%). Sakhalin telekom obtained four licenses from the Ministry of Communications Russian Federation in 1992, 1993 and 1996. Those license was extended for 9 years in 1997. The company also had three construction licenses that are updated every three years. All of those licenses are valid only for the Sakhalin region. Sakhalin telekom invested US$4 million by 1998. The planned investment for 1998-2000 were US$4 million. On July 13, 2005, VimpelCom purchased 60% of Sakhalin Telecom Limited from Cable & Wireless. In September 2005, VimpelCom sold this 60% stake to Golden Telecom for approx. US$5.0 million in cash. As a result of this acquisition and combined with its previous ownership interest, Golden Telecom owned 83% of Sakhalin Telecom. In 2008, Golden Telecom's parent company, EDN Sovintel LLC (Russian: ??? ??? C???????), Sovintel was acquired by Vimpelcom (Beeline).
