Description
Description | The project includes the rehabilitation of the interior of north and south containment berms of the wastewater polishing pond. The polishing pond is located along the north bank of the Petitcodiac River south of Jill Street in Salisbury and serves as the final clarification step for wastewater effluent from the wastewater treatment facility before it is discharged into the river. Natural erosion has deteriorated the inside slopes of the pond’s containment berms, which threatens the structural integrity of the berms and makes maintenance access difficult. Reinforcement of the interior and widening of the top of the berms is necessary to prevent berm failure and facilitate regular maintenance activities. Similar work was performed on the interior of the west containment berm in 2014 as a response to damage caused by a flooding event and preventive reconstruction work was perform on the interior of the east berm in 2018 due to significant natural erosion. Also, due to the polishing pond’s proximity to the Petitcodiac River, the exterior of the pond’s southwest berm is subjected to erosion from the powerful tidal action of the river and has resulted in significant erosion along the outer surface of the containment berm. Failure of any portion of the pond’s containment berms could result in the premature release of the effluent into the river and/or into an adjacent provincially significant wetland that was developed by Ducks Unlimited. The project will involve the following: - addition of fill material (borrow, granular base, and riprap) to repair, reinforce and widen the interior of the containment berm on the north and south sides of the polishing pond (approximately 280 m total length) - erosion protection on approximately 50m of the exterior of the southeast corner of the containment berm of the polishing pond - installation of sediment and erosion control structures - reinstatement of all landscaped areas |
