Samsung Heavy Industries plans to commercialize floating data centers by Q2 2028. The project involves developing a dedicated barge to house servers, electrical infrastructure, and on-board power equipment. Initial deployments will use shore-based electricity, leveraging existing grid infrastructure and benefiting from water cooling. The floating data centers aim to overcome land shortages and reduce cooling requirements by maintaining a stable temperature. Challenges such as water ingress, humidity, saltwater corrosion, and stability in tides and currents need to be addressed.
