Description
Description | "Sanctuaries: Tracing Peace and Community through Art is a transnational cultural cooperation project that explores the concept of ""sanctuary"" through participatory, interdisciplinary artistic practice. Coordinated by the Melissa Network in Greece, and implemented with grassroots partners in Poland and Serbia, the project brings together displaced, migrant, Roma and local communities to co-create and present new works in photography, poetry, music and performance. Rooted in border regions and places historically marked by displacement, the project activates symbolic public spaces through collaborative workshops, exhibitions and events. It positions refugees and migrants—particularly women and youth—not as subjects but as co-authors, engaging them in processes of collective storytelling, healing and cultural expression. By doing so, it addresses cultural exclusion, underrepresentation and access disparities in the European arts sector. Sanctuaries aligns with the objectives of the Creative Europe programme by fostering cross-border collaboration, supporting the mobility of artists, enhancing digital and green practices, and promoting inclusive cultural participation. It also contributes to EU priorities on gender equality, civic engagement and intercultural dialogue. Key outputs include community-driven exhibitions, a digital archive and cultural toolbox, and a final transnational event. Through a blend of local anchoring and European reach, the project constructs ephemeral ""sanctuaries"" of dialogue and imagination—strengthening social cohesion, cultural democracy and a renewed European identity in times of crisis and transformation.
