Description | In 2005, the Public Works Department (PWD) of the State Government of Karnataka awarded a greenfield road project, Sandur By-Pass Road Project, to DS Constructions Limited (DSCL) on build-own-transfer (BOT) basis. This project involved construction of a new 16.5 km long two lane bypass road with earthern shoulders to Sandur Town, located in Bellary district of Karnataka. The objective was to divert heavy iron ore traffic from mines situated in and around Sandur away from the town. DSCL was expected to own and operate the bypass for 20 years, including the construction period of 18 months. DSCL established a special purpose company, Sandur Bypass Project Limited (SBPL), to implement this project. The concession agreement between PWD and SBPL was signed in November 2005. The total capital cost of the project was estimated at US$ 8.83 million. Construction works began in May 2006 and the project was scheduled to begin commercial operations in November 2007.
