Description

Description

The Sandy Run Solar project is a planned large-scale solar farm proposed by RWE Solar Development to be built on 1,500 acres of woodlands and farmland in northwestern Berkeley County, South Carolina. The project aims to generate 198 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 37,500 homes, and is designed to tie into Santee Cooper's system to help address an anticipated energy shortfall by 2029. The solar farm is part of a larger 7,500-acre planned development, with the remaining 6,000 acres managed by the landowner. The project includes plans for wildlife-permeable fencing and blueberry cultivation beneath the solar panels. If approved, the project would create up to 100 construction jobs and generate over $45 million in revenue for the county and its school district. The lease for the land would last 35 to 45 years, after which the solar panels would be decommissioned and recycled or disposed of.
