It involves building solar arrays across 1,500 acres as part of a 7,500-acre planned development, projected to produce 198 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 37,500 homes. The project aims to tie into Santee Cooper's system to address an anticipated energy shortfall by 2029. The lease on the land would last 35 to 45 years, after which the solar panels would be decommissioned and recycled or disposed of. The project is expected to bring in over $45 million in revenue for the county and school district and provide learning opportunities for students. Blueberries are planned to be grown beneath the solar panels. The project is currently facing opposition from local residents and some county council members. |
