Description

Description

The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), located nearly 5,000 feet underground in the abandoned Homestake Gold Mine, is a deep underground research facility used for experimentation on harnessing core heat to decarbonize the energy sector. It is part of the Center for Understanding Subsurface Signals and Permeability (CUSSP), a multi-institutional geothermal research project led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The project focuses on developing enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) by pumping cold water into deep wells to be heated by the Earth and returned as hot water or steam to generate electricity. The research involves various sensing equipment to understand underground processes and aims to improve geothermal power plant construction in more locations.
