Sao Tome and Principe - Second road maintenance project

The second road maintenance project (PER2) was recommended by the study of the Road Plan (RP) carried out under the first road maintenance project (PER1) with ADF funding. The roads included in the project are extensions of the country’s most important roads, namely National Road 1 in the North-East and National Road 2, in the South-East. These extensions are situated in the districts of Caue and Lemba, which therefore constitute the project’s direct service area. The letter covers an area of about 500 km, i.e. 58% of that of the island of Sao Tome. Considering the smallness of the island, the project’s enlarged service area extends to all the island of Sao Tome (859 km2). The expected results are (i) the improvement of the state of the RN over 18 km between Neves and Santa Catarina and the RN2 over 4 km between Angolares and Ribeira Peixe by renewing the wearing course, (ii) the rehabilitated RN2 over 15 km between Ribeira Peixe and Porto Alegre and (iii) 29 rehabilitated structures on the RN1 and RN2. Socially, the project will contribute to the fight against rural exodus, to a better use of the existing infrastructure along the project roads and in Sao Tome and in improving the income of the rural populations of the districts of Caue and Lemba.
