Description

Description

SaskPower is planning to implement a 20 MW-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to address the control issues caused by intermittent renewable generations (e.g., wind power) and fluctuating loads. Increased penetration of intermittent renewables contributes to sudden changes in generation and makes it difficult to keep the system-wide balance between load and generation on a moment-by-moment basis. This balance is traditionally maintained by ramping up/down generation units with relatively quick response times such as natural gas plants. BESS’s can respond more quickly than generators to sudden variations in wind and solar generations and provide an emission-free solution as compared to gas generators. By implementing a BESS to improve the control performance of the transmission system, SaskPower can also facilitate more hydro generation imports from Manitoba. This project improves the control capability required to increase the penetration of intermittent renewable generations and helps to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. Implementation of the proposed utility-scale BESS supports SaskPower strategic directions for a cleaner, reliable, modernized grid, and solutions for successful transition to a future of reduced emissions and increased renewable generation. The scope of work is to install and interconnect a 20 MW-MWh BESS to SaskPower’s existing Fleet Street transmission switching station. High voltage apparatus being added to support the interconnection include: 13.8 kilovolt (kV) breakers and neutral grounding transformers. Associated protection, communication and control systems will also be implemented to enable safe and effective operations of the BESS.
