SaskPower Distributed Generation (DG) Enablement
Source: Infrastructure Canada
The objective of the SaskPower Distributed Generation (DG) Enablement Project (the Project) is to enable carbon free and carbon neutral generation in the province. The Project will interconnect approximately 27 generation plants, distributed in the Kindersley, Weyburn, Regina, Grenfell and Meadow Lake area to SaskPower’s 25 and 72 kV network, which is distributed around the province. Description
Description | The objective of the SaskPower Distributed Generation (DG) Enablement Project (the Project) is to enable carbon free and carbon neutral generation in the province. The Project will interconnect approximately 27 generation plants, distributed in the Kindersley, Weyburn, Regina, Grenfell and Meadow Lake area to SaskPower’s 25 and 72 kV network, which is distributed around the province. The 27 plants include: -20 PV generating plants (29 MW solar photovoltaic) -6 Flare Gas plants (34.2 MW flare gas); and -1 biomass plant - MLTC (8 MW biomass). The distributed generation plants are planned to be connected to SaskPower’s 9 substations: Bromhead, Coleville, Estevan West, Grenfell, Halbrite West, Kindersley, Marengo, Meadow Lake and Parkridge substations. These 9 substations and an additional two transmission substations (Glaslyn and Brada) will require some upgrades. This is required to facilitate the biomass generator being connected at Meadow Lake transmission substation. For the purposes of this project, the work being undertaken at the 27 generation stations, 9 substations and 2 transmission substations are considered project assets. As such, in total there will be 38 separate project assets, plus an additional project asset for underground and overhead feeder work. The following scope of work has been identified at this stage - this will be updated based on results of detailed study/design: -Substation upgrades; -Radio Communication to all generation sites except MLTC biomass and Kruger solar site (total 25 radio links); -Communication to Kruger solar will be via approximately 3.5 km underground optical fibre; -Communication terminals and monitoring equipment for all sites; -Approximately 57 km of underground or overhead 25 kV feeder. Detailed feeder location and length is not fully known at this time and will be confirmed through detailed design. The Project will result in increased capacity to manage renewable energy. |
