Description
Description | SATLIT presents an ambitious endeavour to publish eight inbound translations under a new imprint originating mostly from lesser-spoken European languages (Catalan, Croatian, Dutch, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Ukrainian, Spanish) into Latvian. Recent years have seen few translations from these eight languages into Latvian, underscoring the project's aim to amplify translation diversity within Latvia's literary landscape, circulate these works of European literature and foster interest in literature originating from these linguistic traditions. Each of the selected books has garnered widespread acclaim from both readers and critics, with many receiving nominations for esteemed literary prizes. All books share a strong social conscience and explore sensitive issues that remain contentious within Latvian society: aging, LGBT+ topics, refugees, gender equality, worker’s rights, animal rights and exploitation of natural resources, mental health etc. Since there is scarcity of literature addressing these themes in Latvian, these translations will offer fresh perspectives into the local literary discourse, while also drawing new audiences through their exploration of important social concerns. Primary objective of this project is to introduce Latvian readers to the socially conscious literature from Europe's lesser-spoken languages. Additionally, we aim to elevate the visibility of translators and underscore their role as agents for societal change. To this end, the project will feature interviews, lectures and discussions with translators, delving into the nuances of their craft and the socio-cultural implications of their work. To bolster the visibility of translated works, 2 authors will embark on visits to Latvia, participating in literary festivals. Diverse distribution and marketing strategies will be implemented that will contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of the book sector via cooperation between different actors within the book value chain. |
