Description
Description | Embroidered the barren desert with silver steel towersMost of Saudi Arabia’s land is very sterile since it is a desert. Except its capital Riyadh, most areas are dry desert. However, Hyundai E&C embroidered the dry desert with a total of 417km-long silver steel towers.Hyundai E&C won the USD 208 million Saudi’s Qassim-Madinah 380kV Transmission Line contract ordered by Saudi Electricity Company (SEC-COA) in 2008. As a 417km long transmission line construction project, the project required connecting “Qassim West Substation” in the central region to “Madinah East Substation” in the western region of Saudi. Hyundai E&C was in charge of all the processes including design·material supply·construction·test turn. The project was the first construction we won from SEC-COA since the Riyadh’s Qassim 380kV Transmission Line construction. To respond to the reliability received from the SEC-COA, Hyundai E&C injected the vast number of employees experienced at the site and established a systematic and professional system from the beginning of the construction. When signing the contract, the SEC-COA highlighted the completion of the project within the deadline by extraordinarily concluding the agreement within just a month to resolve the power supply shortage in the western Madinah Region. It was a big burden for us to complete within 24 months since we had to build more than 1000 steel towers on the 417km long railway line. The zone where a transmission line to be installed was more of a flat land except a volcano 70km of Madinah and mountainous area. However, according to the geological survey conducted in the beginning, Hyundai E&C projected a challenge in excavating the land with auger machine since a rocky ground was wider than expected. Thus, the groundwork was conducted with new equipment (pile driver). For the basic design of steel tower, the construction method was changed from a soil pier to rock anchor. Hyundai E&C also manufactured concrete by ourselves at the site since the railway line was located more than 100km of an urban area to be prepared for a potential supply disruption. This was conducted for the first time in the Saudi’s transmission line construction site, and it became a big help for us in stably supplying material supply and saving cost.Shortened the construction period with passion and challenging spiritAnother problem Hyundai E&C had to overcome at the site was the increase in raw material cost in the initial opening stage. Since the material cost accounted for more than 80% of the entire construction cost, the fluctuating cost in the raw material was challenging throughout the entire construction period. Fortunately, in line with the Lehman Brothers crisis in 2008, the raw material cost plunged unexpectedly. By timely placing an order on raw material, Hyundai E&C were able to save more than 5% in the material cost besides executing the budget within the limit. As all employees strived to achieve one goal for completion, Hyundai E&C was able to complete the construction within 23 months, one month earlier than the planned period. Following the successful completion of the project, Hyundai E&C engraved its name in all parts of Saudi Arabia by winning the following projects: ST-MAR, ST-HAJ, ST-38C, ST-38D, ST38E, ST-38F, and ST-38G. |
