Description

Description

The restoration of the Mohawk Institute is a multi-phased initiative and the site has undergone significant rehabilitation to date. The project consists of Phase 3 of the initiative and involves the structural rehabilitation of the Mohawk Institute Residential School site in Six Nations of the Grand River, Ontario. The Woodland Cultural Centre, an Indigenous organization, is requesting Infrastructure Canada funding for Phase 3 only. Phase 3 of the project consists of restoring the building masonry, restoring and replacing over 100 windows, improving public accessibility (addition of barrier-free main entrance, elevator and accessible pathways around the building), installing security doors, upgrading the HVAC system, and finishing interior restorations (including door frames, flooring, baseboards, and fireplace). The new building will also be equipped with a new emergency generator, allowing the facility to be used as an emergency shelter for community members in the event of a power outage or other significant disaster. The facility will directly service Indigenous Peoples not living on reserve by providing programming, tours, and shared experiences that help increase the national consciousness regarding Indigenous art, culture, language, and knowledge. This national historic site will facilitate healing, and help share the experiences of those most effected by the legacy of residential schools in Canada.
