Description | The Sawalkote hydro-electric project is an ambitious 1,856 MW hydropower project spread across the districts of Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. It involves constructing a dam on the Chenab river in Ramban district, a water diversion tunnel in Reasi district, and an underground powerhouse in Udhampur. The project aims to become the largest hydropower project in Jammu and Kashmir and the third largest in India. Despite preparatory work such as land acquisition and inter-departmental clearances, the project has faced administrative delays, tender cancellations, and slow progress on the ground. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) cancelled a consultancy tender issued in July 2025, further delaying the project. Major approvals and land acquisition are still pending, and construction has not yet begun due to pending environmental and forest clearances. |
