Description | India is set to build its biggest hydroelectric power project on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir. The 1856-Megawatt project will be constructed without seeking Pakistan's no objection, which is otherwise mandated under the Indus Water Treaty. The project is a joint venture between NHPC and Jammu & Kashmir's Power Development Corporation, planned to be built in two phases with an estimated cost of Rs 22,704 crore. The project tendering process has started with bids due by September 10, 2025. It involves relocation of hundreds of families and affects around a dozen villages. The project will follow a BOOT model and J&K will regain full ownership after 40 years. |
