Description | The Sawlakote Dam is a hydel project on the river Chenab in Jammu & Kashmir, India. Originally conceived in the 1960s, it is a run-of-the-river project with a height of 192.5 meters and a reservoir capacity of over 530 million metric cubic meters. The project had been stalled for over 40 years due to objections from Pakistan under the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). The Government of India has now revived the project, classifying it as a project of national importance, and NHPC has floated international tenders for its construction. The estimated cost is 22,700 crores INR, and it will be developed in two phases. |
