Description

Description

"The Nordic and Baltic region currently faces a lack of diversity, making it increasingly vulnerable to incidents such as sabotage, unintentional damages, or ""force majeure"" type events. Currently, virtually all global Internet and corporate traffic from Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark faces the same potential chokepoints in Denmark/Germany. As demonstrated in recent sabotages in Marseille (cutting all three terrestrial routes from one of Europe’s main connectivity hubs), the Northstream pipelines in the Baltic, along with fears of electric power shortages and blackouts in the region, traditional concepts of resiliency are insufficient. The “Scania-Pomerania Bypass: Sweden-Bornholm-Poland express route” aims to connect Sweden to Europe via Poland through a combination of sub-sea fiber cables (178,2km with 6 fiber pairs) and terrestrial fiber (80km with one fiber pair). The project resuscitates an out-of-service seacable and connects it back to Arelion's fiber network in Sweden and Poland, creating a new backbone route that both intermeshes the Nordic countries with European and Global connectivity gateways, while creating additional resiliency by avoiding chokepoints in Denmark/Germany, and better utilization of diverse Baltic sea cables. Besides securing Internet and Cloud connectivity, it will also offer wholesale capacity services for local operators or for cloud and digital service providers that want to connect into Nordic datacenters. It also recycles an existing but out-of-service sea cable which is great from a sustainability point of view."
