Description
Description | The SCOUT program is a four-stage solid fuel satellite delivery system developed by NASA and its partners. It was capable of launching a 385-pound (175kg) satellite into a 500-mile (805 km) orbit of the Earth. Since the 1950s, there have been 118 scout launches with a 96% success rate, including the delivery of 23 satellites for international space organizations. The program involved collaboration with LTV Missiles and Electronics Group of Dallas, which helped develop the airframe and launcher starting in 1959. The system's management was transferred to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in 1991, and the SCOUT has since been retired and moved to The National Air and Space Museum. |
