For centuries the area which today covers the Interreg IIIA -cooperation represented the core of the sea bound Swedish Baltic Sea empire. The archipelago region between the national capitals Stockholm and Åbo was developed into an active and viable region, through which people, goods and information flowed. In the regional cross- border cooperation, it is important to promote and emphasise what the contact across the sea has meant during various periods and to use this knowledge to profile the archipelago region. The comprehensive goal in the project ”Sjövägar” (Sea routes) was to acquire new knowledge about the archipelago region’s maritime history and to use this knowledge to strengthen the region’s profile locally and elsewhere. The project focused mainly on development of qualitative culture tourism. A contact network was established between the participating cultural organisations and museums thanks to this project. Special attention was paid to the manifestation of cultural activities and events during off peak seasons
