Description

Description

The project envisages the construction of a large seawater desalination plant with a production capacity of 50,000 m³ of drinking water per day as well as the associated buildings (reservoirs, distribution network, pumping stations) in order to meet the increasing drinking water demand on the island of Djerba in the long term. Tunisia is one of the most water-poor countries in the world. The amount of renewable fresh water available to one person per year is around 420 m³ (2011), which can already be classified as an absolute water shortage (for comparison, Germany has around 1,700 m³/c/a, water shortages begin at less than 1,000 m³/c/a). Since Tunisia is characterized by a climatic and natural limitation of water availability, the financing of the seawater desalination plant is intended to contribute to the sustainable supply of the population with safe drinking water and at the same time to the protection of the scarce fresh water resources of the Tunisian hinterland.
