Description | Bangladesh has planned to build a second oil refinery beside the existing Eastern Refinery Limited (ERL) plant in Patenga, Chattogram. The project aims to add three million metric tonnes of annual refining capacity, more than tripling the existing capacity and reducing reliance on imported petroleum products. The project has faced delays for over a decade, with completed designs and appointed consultants but no construction started. The project was restructured and approved in 2026 with an increased estimated cost and plans to start construction in the first half of the 2026-27 fiscal year, expected to take about three years. |
