Second Pilot in Finland for digitalisation of travel documents

"The project ""Second Pilot in Finland for digitalisation of travel documents"" (FIN DTC Pilot 2) will focus on the digitalisation of travel documents and facilitation of travel. The main objective of the FIN DTC Pilot 2 project is to test in practice the several phases in the lifecycle of a digital travel document (DTC). The DTC will be based on the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) DTC standard (type-1). In addition to testing the DTC, an important objective of the project is to develop and test a mobile application (iOS and Android) for reading 2D barcodes, displaying data and validating digital signatures according to ICAO standards. The consortium is composed of the National Police Board of Finland (NPB), the Finnish Immigration Service (FIS) and the Finnish Border Guard (FBG). NPB acts as a Coordinator and FIS and FBG act as Associated Partners. These agencies operate under supervision of the Ministry of Interior of Finland. The duration of the project is two years. FIN DTC Pilot 2 builds on the results of previous DTC pilot projects in the Netherlands, Finland and Croatia. It is directly linked to the proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the establishment of an electronic application for the transmission of travel data by electronic means (""EU Digital Travel Application"") and amending Regulations (EU) 2016/399 and 2018/1726 of the European Parliament and of the Council and Council Regulation (EC) No 2252/2004 as regards the use of digital travel documents (2024/0670 (COD). The pilot will test the proposed digital travel document in practice and provide important input for technical requirements that have yet to be made.
