This project is an expansion of wheat mill processing activities in Mozambique. Merec Industries intends to add a new wheat mill, including grain storage silos, in the Beira area, to supplement its maize and wheat storage facility in the Machava-Maputo area. In December 2000, IFC approved and signed a guarantee for the construction of Merec’s mill in Machava-Maputo (project #10185), which is doing extremely well. Merec is currently selling 12,000 tons of flour per year in the Beira region; these quantities would immediately be absorbed in the Maputo area as soon as the Beira mill is operational. The project involves construction of a new 160 tonne/24 hour Buhler mill, silos with storage capacity of 12,500 tons, and office and other new buildings, with production scheduled to begin in 2005. The new plant is expected to achieve full capacity in 2008, if not before, with 2,730 tons per month.
