Self-Powered AI Data Centres Incentive Program

The Alberta government has introduced legislation (Bill 8) to incentivize the development of self-powered AI data centres. The legislation would allow data-centre developers to provide their own power sources through offtake agreements or their own electricity generation at future sites. Projects sourcing their own power would be eligible for fast-tracked approvals if they secure environmental, regulatory, and transmission permits before production. The initiative aims to reduce strain on the provincial electrical grid and boost Alberta's AI data-centre sector, with a goal to develop $100 billion worth of data centres over the next five years.
