Senegal - Diam Niadio-Mbour-Kaolack Road Project

The Diam Niadio-Mbour-Kaolack road project is one of the major components of the Second Transport Sectoral Programme (TSP N 02) in Senegal, covering the period 1999-2004. The TSP 2 aims to improve the existing institutional framework and adapt road, railway, port and airport infrastructure to the needs of the various sectors of activities, in view of the fact that emphasis is on opening up the rural areas which are not easy of access. The project road, which is a section of the main highway linking Dakar and the neighbouring countries and through which most of the commercial activities are carried out by land, is an important link in the national and sub-regional road transport system. Improvement in its level of service vs therefore a determming factor for revitalising the country’s economy. The result expected is a 148 km road, entire y rehabilitated and consisting of the following sections: a) Diam Niadio-Mbour (42 km); b) Mbour-Fatick (64 km) and Fatick-Kaolack (42 km). The three sections of the road will be identical and will comprise 7.20 metres of iLsphalt concrete carriageway and two shoulders each measuring I _50 metres ; all the necessary hydraulic works will also be carried out, including development of localised parking places in towns crossed by the road. The Project cost estimate, exclusive of taxes and customs duties, is UA 26.80 million. The implementation period will be from April 2002 to 2004, that is about 26 months.
