Description
Description | The Management Improvement and Valorisation of Faecal Sludge Project in Ziguinchor is the first investment made by the Government of Senegal as part of the implementation of the Master Plan for Ziguinchor Improved Sanitation (PDAZ). It was initiated following the impacts of climate change endured by the city, including temporal variability and decrease in precipitations, surface water and groundwater drying up, timber capital degradation, the resurgence of road gully erosion, floods, pollution and an increase of air temperature as well as the silting up of rice fields, contributing to the population's poverty. The project aims to contribute to the revitalisation of this important secondary city (Ziguinchor) known for its tourism potential, and regarded as the country’s green heart and ‘grain basket’, but located in a region weakened by a 30-year long political conflict, deforestation resulting from extensive agriculture and climate change. The project consists of five (05) components, namely: (a) access to toilets; professionalising sludge collection and transport services; (c) Community sludge treatment and recycling; (d) capitalisation, sharing and project preparation; and (e) project management. The project is planned for 36 months for a total estimated cost of 1 632 070 euros. |
