Senegal - Road Maintenance Project (PER)

The Road Maintenance Project is one of the major components ofthe second transport sector programme – PST2- whose implementation covers the 2000 – 2006 period. Under the project, road sections selectedfor rehabilitation and periodic maintenance formed part of the priorities of the road sub-sector. The works concern a total length of 482 kilometres distributed between seven out of the country’s eleven regions, namely Diourbel, Fatick, Kaolack, Kolda, Saint-Louis, Thiès and Ziguinchor. In addition, a 640m long bridge should be rehabilitated in the Ziguinchor region. The project should generate a variety of social benefits such as the opening up of over 80 urban and rural localities,increased access to primary education and medical services at less than 30 minutes away by about 80% of the population in the PAI by 2008 as against 75% and 77% respectively in 2003. The expected project outcomes are: (i) 116 km of rehabilitated paved roads, (ii) 338 km of rehabilitated earth roads, (iii) 28 kmof paved roads reinforced, (iv) 640m-long bridge rehabilitated, (v) 20 workers of the MIETTTMI trained, (vi) 300,000 persons sensitized about road safety, environmental protection and HIV/AIDS, and (vii) 2 schools at Kavil and Keur Socé along the KavilKeur Madiabel road rebuilt and protected.
